Practical Help for Families with Aging Parents
When you're helping an aging parent, something new always comes up. One day you're wondering whether Mom is safe at home. The next, you're trying to understand a medical form, find a reliable caregiver, or figure out what to do about changes you've noticed in Dad.
I'm putting together a collection of workshops to help you work through some of these questions. Each one will focus on a particular challenge, explain what you need to know, and give you practical tools to help you get organized and decide what to do next. You'll be able to work through the lessons at your own pace, stopping whenever you need to gather information or talk things over with your family.
Coming Soon
I'm currently developing these workshops and will add them to the library as they're ready. My goal is to make it a little easier for you to find the information you need, understand your options, and feel more prepared to help your parent.
Helping Your Aging Parent: The Florida Documents & Preparedness Workshop
Do you know which documents you might need to help your parent with medical decisions, finances, or an emergency? We'll go through the common Florida documents and permissions, what they're used for, and what questions to ask your parent's attorney, doctor, or financial institution. You'll also have a workbook to help you organize what you already have and identify what's missing.
Mom Seems Different: What Do I Do Now?
Maybe Mom is repeating herself more often, forgetting appointments, or having trouble with things she used to manage easily. How do you know what's normal aging and what needs attention? We'll look at common changes, what to keep track of, and how to begin finding out what's going on.
The Long-Distance Parent-Care Checkup
It's hard to know how your parent is really doing when you don't live nearby, especially when they tell you everything is fine. This workshop will help you figure out what questions to ask, what to look for when you visit, and how to stay informed about their care even when you're miles away.
Are Mom & Dad Safe at Home? A Practical Home Safety Workshop
Your parent may be determined to stay at home, but how can you tell whether their home and daily routines are still safe? We'll look at common concerns such as falls, medications, meals, and household hazards, along with practical ways to identify problems and consider what additional help might be needed.
Hiring and Managing In-Home Care for Your Parent
Finding someone to help your parent at home can be a real challenge, and hiring a caregiver is only the first step. We'll talk about deciding what kind of help you need, finding and interviewing caregivers, setting expectations, and keeping things running smoothly once someone is on the job.
Have a question or an idea for a resource that would make caring for your parent easier? We'd love to hear from you.
